In your opinion, do teachers get paid too much, not enough, or just what they deserve?

I'm generally asking for US citizens, but anyone can answer.

If you're in the US, you can base your answer on the country as a whole or about your state alone.

If you don't know much about the salaries, here's a link to a US map that contains the average salary of 2004-2005 in any particular state.

Many of these state's salaries vary as much as $20G.

When you answer, please specifiy where you're from.

I am a teacher...and without my husband's check, I would not earn enough to make a living. I would make my house payments and pay my bills - no car, no food, etc. So, considering this, I think teachers in NE do not make enough. Considering that we are the people who TEACH doctors to be doctors and lawyers to be lawyers, I think we get the shaft. If a dr. can make over $100,000 a year, why can't the person who taught him to do it make even half that?

AND, to address the people who are saying that we get so much paid vacation...yeah. You obvisouly aren't a teacher. Get a clue. I have had three days this entire summer where I haven't done school work - so get off of it already.
Reply:Not only do teachers teach doctors to be doctors and lawyers to be lawyers, they teach garbage men to be garbage men, homeless people to be homess people, etc. Should teachers pay be based upon these professions (yeah, I know homeless people are not actually in a profession)? Report Abuse

Reply:In general (and there are always specific exceptions to the general rule) ... teaching salaries are probably roughly in parity with overall market levels (that is ... about right) ... assuming the term 'deserves' can be translated to a question of ecomomic parity.

Two part underlying answer. (1) My opinion is that, in general, the teaching profession is undervalued. The fundamental nature of the role has changed over the past 3-4 decades and now requires a great deal of non-academic classroom management, knowledge and compliance with various laws, and compensating for frequent lack of parental and community support. However, (2) in local areas (central Ohio) salaries are proportionate with other market rates for a role with a higher degree of job security than most public sector jobs and with a significantly shorter work year (36 wks compared to 48-51 in most jobs).

With respect to the questioner's observation about regional variations in salary levels, there are wide variations in salaries, cost of living, and standard of living in various parts of the US and I would not expect educator salaries to differ from that general condition.
Reply:sounds like you want a raise
Reply:I'm from Washington state and the average teacher salary is about $45,000. This may not seem like a big number for the long hours they put into their jobs, but we must remember they have like 2.5 months of summer vacation along with winter break, midwinter break, and spring break. So I think they get paid enough.
Reply:As an occupation I'd say they are underpaid. I'm from midwest.

But as a perk they get the summer off, but have to deal with unreasonable parents and disrespectful kids.

I can think of many occupations that are overpaid..:)
Reply:Not paid enough, they are teaching the future leaders of the world!!!
Reply:I am a special ed. teacher in a small Nebraska school. I work with children of all disabilities and ages. I may work with a kindergartener learning to write his name, then switch to a high school kid needing help with algebra, with a little 6th grade English thrown in the mix. I love my job. What I hate is the paperwork. It was always a pain, but now with No Child Left Behind, and Improving Learning for Children with Disabilities (ILCD), it's just ridiculous. It seems it doesn't matter what we do with the kids, as long as the paperwork is filed. I really should get paid extra just to do the hours of paperwork I do on my own time that has nothing to do with day-to-day instruction. Plus it would be nice not to have to get an extra job in the summer just to pay bills...
Reply:not enough for the work they do
Reply:Teachers get paid enough to be in the middle.
Reply:just enough but over here they get about 12 weeks holiday a year in the uk
Reply:not enough

I think teachers get paid enough.
Reply:I think not enough to earn a living.
Reply:Not enough. They deal with so much. They need more pay, and more supprt.
Reply:enough, i saw one teacher complain that she was making $55 grand a year
Reply:They are paid enough. Every teacher I ever met had their own home, health insurance, dental insurance, holidays and weekends off, not to mention a long summer vacation. They can always get a part time job weekends and nights if they have to live beyond their means. Or work summers.
Reply:Not enough. They deserve combat pay
Reply:Teachers salaries start off very small, which is not enough in my opinion. The starting salaries are tiny and the jobs are not easy to get. You have know the "right people" on top having a degree, experience, and just being good at what you do.

But many teachers with experience or those who were lucky enough to get a job in the right school make very good money. The salaries of the teachers in our school district were published a few years ago. I wasnt suprised to see the lower salaries around $22,000, but I was shocked to see salaries upwards of $80,000 (I DONT live in a rich area).

The average teachers salary in my state ranges from what is deserved to little high, especially considering they have 2.5 months off each year.
Reply:Teachers as a whole are WAY underpaid.

They say parenting is the hardest job that you could have. Many teachers go above and beyond parenting some children.

They are put in positions that they are influencing the future. A good or bad teacher could make or break a child's future and therefore the future of the country or even world.

Teachers are put in dangerous positions daily between fights, drugs, guns etc And are under appreciated.

They work more than 40 hours a week often off the clock.

They have to deal with inconsiderate students who have not been taught manners or morals or respect.

And are expected to do more.

They deserve more.
Reply:I think teachers now get what they deserve, but that's because of the quality of teaching that the kids are getting. If we raised salaries, we would attract better people to teaching, and our kids would get a better foundation for the rest of their lives. However, that would involve a huge tax increase, and most people aren't willing to deal with that.

I don't think they get paid enough - especially high school teachers. They have to put up with so much, and don't get paid enough for it.
Reply:they gte paid too little for what they do but if u really like the job i guess its enough for them
Reply:I believe that teaching should be a highly paid profession, and that teachers are far underpaid, although I would not do their job for any amount of money.

Same goes with the ladies and gentlemen who serve this country.

When are we as a whole going to put a stop to this?
Reply:Hello, my name is Kevin and I live in Liverpool, England. May I say that $20,000 does not sound like a lot of money for a job that has so much pressure attached to it, nevertheless, I wonder how many teachers from both sides of the pond would take a pay cut if students behaviour in school improved to such an extent, that teachers could do their jobs without fear of disruption and constant misbehaviour by the minority that seem to have no intention of being educated. Teaching is a vocation and teachers are obviously not in the profession to become rich, I just wish that some pupils and some parents would let the teachers do their job as educators and be respected for the work that they do, under increasing pressure from so many quarters.

Thank you for allowing me to express an opinion.

Reply:I believe it takes a special type of person to be able to have the patience these days to teach.Salery should be based according to there knowledge in communications, Mental Health ,culturel needs and differences along with spiritual and social skills. The more knowledge in wholistic care the higher the pay scale.Income should be based according to State and area.Iam from the United States.
