What is your opinion on rehabilitation in the prison system?

Should taxpayers pay for murderers to take college courses? How do you think prisoners should be treated?

What is your opinion on rehabilitation in the prison system?
Prison is already a place to get an education. The education is from other prisoners on how to do crime. As a generalization, they do not like societies rules and feel they have the right to take anything they can get away with. The concept of earning money and paying bills is a way of "rich" and they have no interest in participating in.

A small percentage, maybe 15%, decide they no longer want to be followers of this crowd. They often can be found going to the prison chappel. Some will even preach and gain confidence doing so. They learn to lead.

Exiting prison is really hard on them. They get a very small check and use most of it for a bus ride back to the county they commited the crime in. First stop is the Parole officer who then provides them a list of housing options or they can go it alone. They are lost, often without family (as they have given up on them). They have no credit, so can't buy or rent a thing. They don't normally want help. Without anything, doing another crime is easier. They often don't mind getting caught. Prison was easier. They put a roof over your head, tell you what to do, and feed you.

Some Counties provide a mentor program (e.g. Orange County, CA). A few take up the offer. It's very successful for those that do.

Yes, I think providing an education is good for prisoners. They get to concentrate on something positive rather than distructive. It provides hope. Humans need goals.

If we ever want to stop paying 20 to 30 thousand a year to house a prisoner out of taxpayer dollars, we need to provide therapy, education, drug rehabilitiation, and other tools so they can contribute to society. So they can start paying taxes like the rest of us.
Reply:There is a growing movement on the Conservative end that rehabilitation in the prison system is a good thing. Remember not all prisoners are rapists and murders. Some are in there for robbery and such. Let's give people who will be released back into society the tools to become a positive citizen so they do not go back.
Reply:There is no rehabilitation in the prison system. That is officially no longer a goal of imprisonment. Prison is for punishment and deterrence.

However, prisoners are still people. They must be allowed to continue to live despite incarceration. Allowing prisoners to read and study and even take college courses is a benefit to society, because someday, these people will no longer be in prison.

However, most long-term prisoners become institutionalized and will be in and out of prison for the rest of their lives. Being deprived of liberty is their punishment, their continued existence and humanity shouldn't be taken away, as well.
Reply:If a person really wants to better themselves I say go for it! That way when they do return to society they will not go back to their old way of life...that is the only reason why there are repeat offenders, prison does not rehabilitate in my opinion, they babysit most of them in between crimes.
Reply:I don't think so, but if we don't, how are they ever going to become contributing members of society?
Reply:Democrats believe that "Sensitivity Classes" will cure murderers, rapists and child molesters.

And..... followed up by "Big Democrat Group Hugs".

And all prisoners can be let out of prison.
Reply:I pay enough damn money each year, which I don't mind as long as it benefits my country!

Murderers, rapists, molesters, etc. DO NOT EVEN DESERVE a second chance. Lock 'em up forever. Problem solved.
Reply:of course not. and they should be treted as human, but with little extras. you cant lock them up for fifty years without some type of entertainment, exercise, proper nutrician.other than that, they put themselves there.
