Who thinks kids should be paid to go to highschool?

I recently saw a news report about how in nyc the mayor is making a new welfare program, where kids would be paid to graduate from highschool, go to their annual doctor physicals go to dentist etc. This would be for low income familys, and the mayor claimed he is paying for all of it, so no tax dollars are used. I personaly think this a good idea, welfare is already givin to most low income familys for doing nothing, atleast with this program people would have to accomplish something before they get any money. If nothing else it would possibly motivate kids to stay in school and motivate parents to keep their kids in school. Also alot of kids in these areas of poverty are surrounded by negitive infulences such as gangs and drugs and their older siblings and parents allot of the time feel neglected by the system now the system is giving them a little bit back out of THEIR pocket not the tax payers, Remember these are just thoughts not neccesiarly my solid opinion so no need to insult me

Who thinks kids should be paid to go to highschool?
Thats a great generosity that will certainly have a good impact on people's lives for generations to come. It is coming out of his own pocket, I'd hope people wouldn't have a problem with it.

Of course, you help someone and people still complain, go figure! I swear people have a thing against helping the poor. Idiots always lump them with being lazy, and never take into account other situations. IGNORANT as can be if you ask me. If someone wants to donate money including a mayor, that is THEIR BUSINESS!!! Donating to the poor is a worthwhile cause contrary to what some of you poor misguided people think.
Reply:I too saw the news article. I thought it both impracticle and silly. I feel that people too stupid to realize that their education is the one thing that will save them from a life of poverty pretty much deserve to live in it. The education is already "Free," paid for by the tax payers regardless of whether they have children, children in school or not. If they choose not to pay attention and do well, it's their bed. Let them sleep in it. Perhaps a better solution would be to make their parents welfare check be contingent on and paid out in part or in whole based upon the number of days in school and their grades. Think that might get a little parental involvement going?
Reply:ACTUALLY free public education already exists. The reward for graduating is a DIPLOMA. And healthcare is available for less than affluent families, especially in impoverished areas. By the way, since you mentioned no tax dollars will be used, first of all that is insane, the mayor is not going to buy health insurance for all the poor kids in NYC, and even if he did, who pays the mayor? The TAXPAYERS.
