Was Johan Santana worth the 7 years - 151 million that the Mets paid him? 21 million a year. In my opinion,?

it is always stupid to invest more than a 3 year contract in a pitcher, because you never know if they will blow out their arms, or other injuries, i.e. Denny Neagle, Mike Hampton, Pedro Martinez. I guess they did this contract, they being Santana's agent, with the Barry Zito contract as the framework, and because the Giants overpaid Zito with the 7 years 126 million, then the Mets had to top that for the 2 time Cy Young winner Santana. If Santana's body holds up and he is able to give the Mets 200 Innings and 15-18 wins per season, 200 K's, for the 7 years, then it is a good deal, but in my mind, it's ludicruos to give ANY player more than a 3 year deal, that goes for position players. I am not a big fan of the 10 year 275 million deal the Yankees gave A-Rod, but hey, who am I? Just a guy with a computer and an opinion, what do you think?

I totally agree. Zito is the perfect example. Up until this point he was the highest paid pitcher when he got picked up by the Giants, and look how he turned out for the team. Not to mention Santana definitely slowed down this past season. Now that could've been because he wanted out of Minn. but hey, maybe he really did lose some of his heat. And you're also right, signing a pitcher to a long term deal is very risky. He can easily blow out his arm from just one simple throw, and all that money will have gone to waste.
Reply:the mets needed one thing..starting pitching..and they got one of the best, if not the best, pitcher in the game...yes they spent a lot, but it was a necessity for the team...if mets didnt get the deal done, within 2 days the yankees or boston wouldve given santana and the twins exactly what they wanted
Reply:dont think any player is worth that much...but if any player was going to get it would be him
Reply:I think he'll be excellent for 3 years and win 16 to 19 games, then he'll be mediocre the following 2 years (when he'll be 32 and 33 years old), and really decline the last 2 years of the contract.

So basically they're paying $30M for the "good" years, $20M for the mediocre, then $10M for the "bad" years. It's a lot of money, but that's what pitching costs these days.
Reply:Heavily overpaid.....This contract makes the Zito's contract look good.
Reply::He would have not signed with the Mets unless they gave him a long term deal. Lets hope it works out for all parties involved. He is a great pitcher and you don't want to see him injured.
Reply:long term deals are stupid, say there is a comebacker that hits him in the hand, he is done and the mets are ******
Reply:no he's not theres no pitcher worth that kind of money!
Reply:He will be well worth the money into the first four/five years into the contract. After that, he will slowly fade away just like Pedro.

But, overall, the deal the Mets reached with Santana was a excellent deal. He can provide 20 wins for years to come.

With Santana, I believe the Mets could easily make it to the World Series. But, from thier we have to wait and see if thier bullpen can hold up and thier offense.

Remember, the Mets still have a terrible bullpen and a OK offense. Reyes, Wright, and Beltran are the only true stars in my eye. Delgado will probably get injured because of his old age, Brian Schnieder will be so so, Jose Castillo will hit .280 - .290, and Right Field and Left Field dont have any potential to have a good season.

With Santana, the Mets will win about 95 games. So to get back to the point, yes, Santana was worth the 7 years and 151 million the Mets offered them.
Reply:He may not be worth that much but besides Josh Beckett he's the best pitcher in the game
Reply:he isnt worth nearly that much...maybe mid to high teens, maybe. But that is what the Mets are willing to do in order to take back control of the division. After they had a seven game advantage with two weeks left and lost the division last year...and in a division that had been dominated by the braves for 14 years before that, the mets are willing to try anything to get it back.
Reply:It may have been a great deal for Santana , but the Twins got beat ! the Yankees had the best offer on the table for Jonhan and they have the money , but no matter how great you are , you are a nobody untill you can make those fan of the yankees HAPPY %26amp; IMPRESSED ..OTHER WORDS A "R*I*N*G"
Reply:Well, it's risk vs. reward. Johan has been pretty durable throughout his career, and while it's true some pitchers have blown out their arms, I don't think it'll be the case with Johan.

He'll earn his pay for the next 4 years, but after that, he'll be be overpaid.
Reply:It was a wise move on the part of the Mets. They have been looking for this caliber of pitcher for a number of years, and have come up short every time.

perfect teeth
