In your opinion, what are the top 5 small dogs that are easy to care for?

1. We live in a townhouse-not a lot of room.

2. I'm especially interested in a dog that does not require a lot of "paid for" grooming.

3. Good with kids!!!!!

"Good with kid" small dogs are shih tzus, pugs, bichons, even bostons

Not a lot of paid for grooming would be anything with short hair.

Get a toy breed.

All american in a shelter?

Most big dogs are more relaxed in the house than little dogs, and are usually better with kids. Just something to think about.

Papillon

Boston Terrier

Schipperke

Jack Russell Terrier

Miniature Dachshund

Just an FYI small breed dogs are not recommended for families with young children. Also, children and dogs should never be left unsupervised.

Reply:Most small dogs, if trained properly, can be trained to work well with children. I have two Chihuahuas myself and they are excellent with children. I teach first grade and brought them out for a fall carnival and they were very sweet, accepting of petting and being held, very socialized. They are very low maintenence regarding grooming (nails trimmed once a month) and need very little exercise. I live in a one bedroom apartment and they enjoy the "space" they have.

1. Chihuahuas

2. Miniature Yorkshire Terriers

3. Miniature Daschund

4. Rat Terriers

5. Pomeranians

Research all breeds before you decide and then go as a family together to a breeder or shelter and "visit" with each potential contender to find the perfect match and new member of the family. :-)
Reply:how small are you looking for? It also depend on the age of you kids. My sister in law has a she-poo that about 10 pounds and sooo sweet. Try and find something mixed with a poodle I wouldn't go with anything under 10 pound if your kids are under 8 or have not been around a lot of little dogs. DON't go with a yorkie or a pomeranian!!!! why too much grooming and too lil!!

how about a corgi.. they're robust dogs.
Reply:Ok sounds like you want a short haired Dachshound! so go down to you local shelter and find your self a buddy! or go to www.petfinder.com search dachshounds! seriously the only real grooming they need is nails clipped and a bath! But dachshounds need alot of love! they are almost like little babysso be prepared to play alot (of coursethats with any dog) or they will eat the carpet!
Reply:Italian Greyhound is indeed great...but legs are very fragile in tight places and with kids around. Legs can break easily. But hair simply does not shed! Very short hair. Very loveable. But you must get them extremely young and train them your way...otherwise they have a mind of their own and will RULE your house and you will possibly give it to the pound. IG's are not easy until trained by YOU!
Reply:Whippet
