Question for employers and managers, why do women get paid less?

I know this has been asked several times but I'd like to take a different angle I'd especially like to hear the opinions of employers or hiring managers etc.

Why do women in general get paid only $0.75 (US) to every dollar a man makes?

You should have anonymity here so please be honest. If a female employee asked for a raise or more money, and you knew they rightfully deserve it would you give it to them? or would you hem and haw, stall, or just say no hoping she will back off and forget about it?

Although this is a question aimed at employers and hiring managers I'd be interested in hearing everybody's response. Any first hand experiences? I have my own experience as well as a theory, but I'm curious to what you all think.

The last time I asked for a raise I got told to sit on someones lap. I don't think that would be as funny if it were a woman asking. But if you think about it we haven't been too far away from when women came into the workforce instead of staying home all day tending to the house needs. I think women are capable of doing a lot of things. In the office there is no doubt that a women can do what a man does so there should be no difference in pay. Shouldn't be anyway. But I think if she deserved it and it was justified, I'd give a woman a raise.
Reply:Self fulfilling prophecy.

You get paid what you think you deserve, quite often.

Anyone I work with get's paid their value, regardless of age, sex, orientation, religion, race.

Meritocracy rules.
Reply:That is an old myth.

Be sceptical when someone states a statistic like that. Where is the data? How did they come to that conclusion? Are they comparing apples to apples?

If any company is paying females 75% of males for the same job...lawsuit city.

It just doesn't make sense. I am not claiming that there is no sexual harassment...far from it. But be sceptical when someone pulls out statistics like that.
