Does anyone know where I can get a free appraisal or at least an opinion on the value of an antique?

I bought an antique 1940's singer sewing machine today. It works, and is in stable condition. All the work that needs to be done to it is a refinish. I can't pay anyone to appraise it, but I want to know how much it's worth. I also have some books that might be worth something, so I would like to find out. If you can give an opinion, or knows someone who will do so for free, please let me know asap. Thanks!

Singers come in many flavors. It's worth as much as a person is willing to pay. Right now, the Featherweight Singers are the rage for quilters. You get a premium price for this sturdy little portable.

I repair Singers for fun. They are great for cotton, but since the old black machines don't have zig-zag stitching it doesn't appeal to many modern seamstresses. You can look up the year and model your Singer was made by going on the antique Singer website. You'll need the serial number which is usually stamped on a plate somewhere near the wheel assembly. Then, go on Craig's list and compare what people are asking for their machines.

As for your books, check with antiquarian book exchange,

http://www.abebooks.com. Maybe you can find the value of your books there.

Good luck!
